Warner's Annual Sloe Swap 2020

Saturday 26th September 2020 from 10am until 4pm

Gin Fans, it’s foraging time! Autumn hedgerow fruits are now ripening in late summer ahead of schedule. This is due to the incredible summer we’ve had this year followed by bursts of heavy rain and a sudden drop in temperature as we come out of the heatwave! Ripening fruits can be found throughout our countryside right now with hedgerows laden with ripening sloes, elderberries and blackberries.

Sloe harvests are directly linked to the quality of the weather occurring in the spring and summer: too dry and sloe berries will be small and shrivelled, too cold and wet means berries will be few and far between. The balance between warm weather and rainfall gives the best conditions for an epic harvest!

Traditionally, you’d wait until the first frost to pick your sloes, however, by taking advantage of hedgerows laden with fruit now, foragers can pick and freeze sloes ready for our annual Sloe Swap. On Saturday 26th September between 10am and 4pm, you’ll be able to swap your sloes for some of our fruity and award winning Harrington Sloe Gin!

BUT THERE ARE RULES...

Please do not arrive onsite without a pre-purchased (free) ticket; due to COVID-19 we have to ensure the safety of all our staff, guests and the distillery, therefore it is very much ‘no ticket, no entry’

Please ensure you bring proof of your ticket with you to show our staff onsite

Warner’s Distillery can allow for one household per ticket with a with a maximum of 6 households per half an hour slot throughout the day

Please ensure you have your facemask when entering the facility, sanitising stations will be available in various locations

Remove any twigs and leaves – these will be detrimental to flavour. You can use a hair drier to blow the leaves away as you pour your sloes into a bucket. This will be both fun and effective.

Freeze your sloes until 26/09/20 – this ensures that they stay ‘fresh’, whilst bursting the skins and saving us from hand-pricking them all!

Sloe Swap FAQ's

Gin Fans, come and join us for our annual Sloe Swap at Falls Farm on Saturday 26th September 2020. Were encouraging our local community (and further!) to get involved with this years Sloe Swap. It's a fun activity to get your friends and family involved with... and you can swap your sloes for our Harrington Sloe Gin!

A sloe is a fruit that can be found on a Blackthorn Tree. Check out what a Blackthorn Tree looks like below and find out more about them here

You will need:

  1. Walking stick
  2. Umbrella
  3. Gloves
  4. Bucket

Put on your gloves. Hold your umbrella upside down underneath a sloe bush. Hook your walking stick around a branch and pull it down towards you. Gently pluck the individual ripe sloes with your fingers, allowing them to tumble into your umbrella, then pour them into your bucket. Avoid stripping the branch, as you will catch unripe sloes as well as leaves and twigs. Any berries that are still firmly attached to the bush are not ripe, so leave them be until your next visit.

Remove any twigs and leaves – these will be detrimental to flavour. You can use a hair drier to blow the leaves away as you pour your sloes into a bucket. This will be both fun and effective.

Freeze your sloes - Please freeze them until Sunday 6th October. This ensures that they stay ‘fresh’, whilst bursting the skins and saving us from hand-pricking them all! It will also add some weight to your haul, so well worth doing...!

  1. 2-5kg of frozen sloes = 1 x 5cl bottle of Warner's Sloe Gin
  2. 5-10kg of frozen sloes = 1 x 20cl bottle of Warner's Sloe Gin
  3. 10+kg of frozen sloes = 1 x 70cl bottle of Warner's Sloe Gin

No, we only use sloes in our Sloe Gin. Sloes and damsons are very similar in the way they look, but using damsons would affect the flavour of our gin. A sloe is slightly smaller and firmer than a damson. Damsons tend to be found on trees whereas sloes are more commonly found on hedgerows.

Saturday 26th September between 10am and 4pm.
