Earth Day 2022

What is Earth Day?

Earth Day is a global awareness event focussing on the environmental issues facing our planet. It is a moment in time for us to reflect on the impact of our activities and question whether we are doing the right thing. It’s a moment to take time out and question; are there any actions we can take to do things a little differently, that could have a positive impact on the health of our planet?

One percent for the planet

At Warner’s we're shining a light on the role nature plays across our business and have a vision to become the most nature positive drinks business in the world. The daily decisions that we make are guided by this vision and as 1% for the planet members [1], we also invest 1% of total business revenue to protect and take care of nature, the way it takes care of us.

What is this year’s theme?

On 22nd April 2022, the theme is ‘Investing in our planet’.

So, as we stop and reflect on this Earth Day and what we can do to invest, we would like to share the concept of natural capital [2]. Natural capital is a way of putting a value on natural resources, from rocks to soil health, from air to water and all living things. Not all have an obvious monetary value, but they do have worth. It is vital to understand the role that nature plays in our day to day as that allows us to put a value on it and invest in natural capital, which can be overlooked as it is often free and naturally occurring.

As our environment changes and the health and quality of these assets change, we begin to notice them more and their true value becomes clear. Here in the UK, we are not particularly advanced when it comes to recognising the value of nature and in fact, we are one of the most nature depleted countries on earth [3], scoring in the bottom 12% globally when it comes to looking after our wildlife (or biodiversity). Therefore, we need to recognise what we have and protect it.
