Sustainability Sunday: World Earth Day

Sustainability Sunday: World Earth Day

World Earth Day is an annual event celebrated globally on April 22nd, giving us the perfect opportunity to demonstrate our support for environmental protection. First held in 1970, it’s helped to raise awareness and drive positive changes that have benefited our planet. This year they’re focusing on climate action, including reducing in emissions and the drive to achieve net zero by 2050.

In 2015, a United Nations Climate Change Convention agreed a strategy to help reduce the negative consequences of climate change. Known as The Paris Agreement, it set out plans to combat climate change and to accelerate and intensify actions for a sustainable low carbon future.

Taking action to ensure a sustainable low carbon future is so important and can be done in a number of ways. For example, did you know that our hedgerows, which help capture carbon, support some of our rarest wildlife, proving feeding opportunities, breeding spaces and intricate travel networks? Lack of management results in a line of trees (known as a shaw) which age and die, causing the habitat to be lost, meaning regeneration is key.

Protecting our hedges and wildlife

Hedges capture carbon in their woody growth, in their roots below ground and in the leaf litter which is worked into our soils through decomposition. They also prevent soil erosion, assisting in flood alleviation, improve air and water quality and can act as a carbon trap. Find out more from Hedgelink .

We are so proud to be supporting the People’s Trust for Endangered Species (PTES) with every sale of our Raspberry Gin. Check out some of their amazing work here. The tapestry of fields and hedgerows we associate with our countryside needs protecting, for people and for wildlife.
